Implementation of the project under the Operational Programme Smart Growth for the years 2014-2020 - sub-measure 4.1.1 Strategic Research Programs for the Economy - Joint Initiative with the Silesian Voivodeship "Silesia under the Blue Sky"

ABAKUS Systemy Teleinformatyczne Sp. z o.o. is implementing a research project titled “Development of a prototype platform for forecasting and monitoring air pollution,” which is co-financed by the European Funds under the Operational Program Intelligent Development 2014-2020, Action 4.1 Research and Development, Sub-measure 4.1.1 Strategic Research Programs for the Economy – Joint Venture with the Silesian Voivodeship “Silesia under the blue sky”.

Project objective

Development of a platform enabling effective prediction of the spread of air pollution (smog), taking remedial action to reduce low emissions, creating an efficient database of potential hazards, and early warning residents of air pollution alarm levels.

The platform’s innovation will be expressed through higher effectiveness in predicting dispersion of pollution, taking into account emission sources in relation to terrain and building height, the ability to integrate the proposed tool with existing sensor systems and meteorological stations used by local authorities.

The project is being carried out in consortium with Akademia Techniczno-Humanistyczna in Bielsko-Biała.

 

Planned effects

Implementation of the project results in the form of a comprehensive predictive-monitoring platform for air quality will allow for the following benefits for local authorities and areas with high atmospheric pollution (primarily in the Silesian Voivodeship – a Partner of the Strategic Program):

  • construction of air quality monitoring sensor systems;
  • prediction of the air pollution level in a given region;
  • visualization of changes in air quality in a historical context in relation to the analysis of predicted data;
  • implementation of mechanisms for informing and warning the public within one advanced technological solution in order to increase awareness of the existing problem and protect health (alert system);
  • definition and indication of the highest density of smog, which will allow for specific actions to eliminate or reduce the emission of pollutants;
  • the possibility of creating mechanisms to support the optimization of expenditure on reducing particulate matter concentrations in the air;
  • support for decision-making processes in the field of spatial policy of urbanized areas to ensure (planning) effective ventilation corridors;
  • reduction of morbidity, reduction of treatment costs, and absenteeism of residents due to preventive actions (effective warning against smog and high concentrations of air pollutants).
